Award-winning film director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan held for stalking actor Manju Warrier | Kochi News

KOCHI: Kochi police took filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan into custody from Parassala in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday morning for allegedly stalking and sending unsolicited messages to actor Manju Warrier.
He was booked under Section 354D (any man who-follows a woman and contacts or attempts to contact such a woman to foster personal interaction repeatedly despite a clear indication of disinterest by such a woman.) The offense is danceable. Commissioner CH Nagaraju said that he was taken into custody based on the complainant’s allegation that he was stalking her.
“There was one instance of physical stalking and several unsolicited messages. Repeated and wilful following of a woman amounts to stalking. He was sending unsolicited messages to the complainant despite being blocked online and has been switching from one platform to another. The lady, hence , feels harassed or comes under the fear that he might come wherever she goes. This element also comes under stalking,” said Nagaraju.
Officers said the case was not about content shared on social media by the accused but about messages shared much before, which amounts to stalking. There were continuous, unsolicited messages before it spilled on to social media where he made claims regarding the complainant, said the police.
“He was sending messages from 2019 and the posts he made on social media were done in the last stages of the offence. When she started blocking him online, he brought it into the open and wrote posts about her. He tried to communicate through all modes, including letters,” said an officer.
The complainant had acted and produced Sasidharan’s Kayattam, which was released last year. Last month, Sasidharan had made a Facebook post expressing his fear that her actor’s life was in danger and that she was being controlled by her aides.
In December last year, he wrote a post saying that he got a call from a person identified as a police inspector warning him that the actor had complained about his Facebook posts. He had said in the post that, ‘During the movie and post-production, he had developed a ‘deep admiration’ for her. In a post made on December 15, he wrote that ‘Kayattam’ will be remembered as his admiration for her and love for her.
He also admitted in one of his FB posts that he had gone to Kottayam, where she was attending a hotel inauguration, a few days ahead of her. He claimed that before he could say anything, a gang of men surrounded her and moved her to her car from her.
