Actress Manukriti Pahwa, daughter of veteran actors Seema Pahwa and Manoj Pahwa, will make her film debut with ‘Ye Mard Bechara,’ which also features her mother Seema.
Manukriti says the film is intended to convey a message about gender equality by breaking the stereotype of toxic masculinity.
Being a stage actress on the Mumbai theater circuit, this is the first time that Manukriti not only made her screen debut, but also worked with her mother on the film.
Speaking about her character in the movie, Manukriti told IANS, “I’m playing a girl from Haryana named Shivalika. Even though she is from a small town, she has a fairly modern outlook on life, as she understands the social pressure her husband or any man goes through in a patriarchal society. So she believes that if we want some equality in our society, we also have to understand the expectations and the pressure that a man also goes through because he is a ‘man’. She tries to change the conversation there. In fact, that’s the core of our film ‘Ye Mard Bechara.’
After playing some of the most beloved on-screen mother characters for Bhumi Pednekar and Kriti Sanon in films such as ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ and ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ respectively, she will now be seen as an on-screen mother to her. A real-life daughter, Seema shared how the feeling is so different.
“First of all, in this movie I play a mother who is also a mother-in-law. So it has a dual tone in the same character. Since this is my daughter’s debut, I have that nervousness of a typical mother before her children go to a big exam! Look, I know how good she is as an actress but it doesn’t end there. An actor becomes a successful one thanks to the love and appreciation of the audience. In plays, we get reactions instantly. In movies, we have reviews, collections, etc. I’m looking forward to that reaction from the audience for my daughter, ”shared Seema.
The film is directed by Annup Thapa and also features Veeraj Rao, Manikk Choudhari, Bijendra Kala, Atul Srivastav, and Sapna Sand.
‘Ye Mard Bechara’ opens at the theater on November 19.
