Raja Bhaiya contested the assembly elections for the first time in 1993 from the seat of the Kunda assembly. Raja Bhaiya has been a member of the ALM from the Kunda assembly seat seven times since 1993. Samajwadi Party (SP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or Congress, no party could break into Raja Bhaiya’s impregnable Kunda fort. Raja Bhaiya comes from the royal family of Kunda.

Political background

The Kunda assembly seat was also a stronghold of Congress in the first years after independence. From 1962 to 1989 Niyaz Hasan from Congress used to be a member of the Kunda justice. Nijay Hasan was MLA from the Kunda assembly seat for five consecutive terms. Raja Bhaiya participated in the 1993 elections as an independent candidate supported by the BJP and was victorious. Also in the 1996 assembly elections, Raja Bhaiya won as a BJP-supported candidate and won the 2002, 2007 and 2012 elections with the support of the Samajwadi Party.

2017 mandate

Raja Bhaiya was elected to the assembly for the seventh consecutive time in the 2017 elections from the Kunda assembly seat. Raja Bhaiya, who entered the fray as an independent candidate, defeated his closest rival, BJP candidate Janaki Sharan Pandey, by a huge margin of more than one lakh of votes in the 2017 elections. Raja Bhaiya obtained 1 lakh 36,223 votes, while Janaki Sharan Pandey could only get 32,870 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Parvez Akhtar ranked third with 17,176 votes.
