Earth’s ‘sunscreen’ is rapidly melting … NASA video shows a huge ozone hole over Antarctica TSTR

History highlights

  • This hole in the ozone layer is larger than the size of North America.
  • Scientists estimate: by the end of November, the layer can be cured again
  • The ozone layer may fully recover in 2070 instead of 2060

A new video from the US space agency NASA has increased panic among scientists. Because it has been shown in this video that there has been a large hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. This is the largest hole for the thirteenth time since 1979. Scientists believe this condition is due to global warming. The ozone layer is monitored by three satellites of NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The first is AURA, the second is SOMI-NPP, and the third is NOAA-20.

From NASA Video It is clearly shown how on October 29, 2021 over Antarctica ozone layer It has a big hole. Scientists estimate that it will take the month of November to close this hole. Ozone is an oxygen compound that is not only formed naturally, but can also be produced by humans. It forms above the top of the Earth’s atmosphere.

How is the ozone layer naturally formed?

Ozone forms in the stratosphere when ultraviolet radiation from the sun collides with molecular oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. Therefore, ozone acts as a sunscreen. Protects the earth from ultraviolet rays. The sad thing is that due to the chlorine and bromine released by human activities, the ozone layer begins to deteriorate. It has a hole. Through this hole, the sun’s ultraviolet rays begin to reach the ground.

Under the Montreal Protocol in 1987, 50 countries signed an agreement to ban the production of substances that deplete the ozone layer. But many countries in the world did not sign it. Because many of those countries do not easily follow this protocol. However, NASA says the Montreal Protocol has benefited enormously. Paul Newman, chief scientist for Earth Sciences at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said the condition of the ozone layer worsened in 2021 because the stratosphere was cooler than average. If there was no protocol, it could have been bigger.

The hole in the ozone layer reaches its highest level

This year, the hole in the ozone layer reached its highest level. It was the size of North America. That is, 2.48 million rupees per square kilometers. NASA said the ozone layer has declined rapidly since mid-October this year. If the Montreal Protocol had not been applied, by now the size of the ozone layer would have been 4 million square kilometers and more.

Vincent Henry Pew, director of the European Union’s Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service, said that when countries signed the Montreal Protocol, scientists had said that the ozone layer would fully recover by 2060. But as of now recovery is very slow. Now it will take at least 2070 to complete.
