Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani almost had a role in Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3 before being cast as Kingo in the Marvels movie. The actor’s career has been a whirlwind, from stand-up settings to hit sitcoms. Before he was known for his role in directing Chloé Zhao, he was best known for projects like Silicon Valley and The Big Sick.
His latest film just hit theaters last week and has become Hollywood’s second-highest release in 2021 at $ 162 million. While the MCU just released it, it has also gone into production for the third installment of GOTG.
Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 casts Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff. But what if we told you that Kumail Nanjiani from Eternals was going to be part of this cast too?
Eternals co-writer Kaz Firpo revealed during an interview with My Mom’s Basement that they were originally banned from casting Kumail Nanjiani due to the actor’s prior engagement to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Firpo said: : ‘It has to be Kumail!’ and they told me: ‘It can’t be because he has a role in’ Guardians of the Galaxy 3 ‘”.
While in another interview with ScreenRant he shared how a delay in the GOTG created an opening for the actor. “But yeah, all the delay happened with Guardians, who miraculously opened the door for Kumail to come into our movie, so I think that’s just one of those moments meant to be.”
“I am a bit disappointed by the delay personally, as a fan, but as a filmmaker, I am very grateful, because I think that no one could have done it like Kumail,” said Kaz Firpo.
In addition to Kumail Nanjiani, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Lauren Ridloff, and more appear on Eternals.
