The controversy that began over the increased jurisdiction of the Border Security Force in Punjab continues. A resolution on this issue is likely to be tabled at the special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly on Monday. Earlier, Congressman Manish Tewari attacked the Punjab government. Tiwari has raised the question by tweeting that it will be almost a month since the Central Government’s notification to increase the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force. Why has the Punjab government not yet challenged it in the Supreme Court under Article 131? He wondered if the protest against him was just a hoax.

In Punjab, the security of some 600 km of border adjacent to the border with Pakistan is in the hands of the Border Security Force. Until now, the BSF had the right to act up to 15 km from the border. The central government has increased it to 50 km. The Punjab government is opposed. The government argues that this will bring half of Punjab under the jurisdiction of the BSF.

Captain has supported the decision of the Center
Earlier, former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh justified the Center’s decision to increase the jurisdiction of the BSF. The Captain had said that weapons and explosives coming from the other side of the border are not a minor problem. These are removed by tracking the respective location via drones. He has an open conversation with the Union Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah, on this subject. The central government takes this whole matter seriously. If the Punjab government is convening a special session on this issue, it should tell the public that BSF is there for the security of Punjab and not to interfere with the work of the state government.

The Punjab police are quite strong. The Punjab police will do their job, but when BSF’s help is needed, BSF will be in the lead. As a border state, Punjab is at higher risk. BSF is there to help maintain national security in the state. In the interests of national security, the state must fully support the Center and not oppose it.
