Congressman Shashi Tharoor has once again praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shashi Tharoor believes that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had a national appeal and represented Gujaratis and Narendra Modi is like that too. Tharoor has described Prime Minister Modi as a canny politician. Shashi Tharoor has said these things in his book ‘Pride, Prejudice and Scholarship: The Essentials of Shashi Tharoor’.

Shashi Tharoor has written in his book that Narendra Modi is a canny politician who has distinguished himself from the rest of the Gujaratis, especially Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He wrote that it began in 2014, when Narendra Modi, then Gujarat’s chief minister, aggressively claimed Sardar Patel’s legacy.

Tharoor wrote that, moving away from his party line, Modi had asked farmers across the country to donate iron for the 600-foot-tall statue of Sardar Patel. This statue is the tallest in the world, which has dwarfed even the Statue of Liberty. Tharoor wrote that after the 2002 riots, Modi’s image was tarnished, but then he presented himself as a leader who took tough and decisive action like Patel.

Sardar Patel represents both a national attraction and a man of Gujarati origin who is friendly to Modi and the message of ‘Modi after Patel’ resonates among Gujaratis, he wrote.

However, he further wrote that it is ironic that a self-proclaimed ‘Hindu nationalist’ like Modi also claims to be a Gandhian leader who never displayed his Indian nationalism with a religious label. He wrote that Sardar Patel believed in equal rights for all, regardless of religion and caste.

In this book, Tharoor has also mentioned what he had said about First Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru after the death of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He wrote: Vajpayee had asked the nation to rededicate itself to the ideals of Nehru. He used words like “unity, discipline, and self-confidence” for Nehru, something Modi was never able to do.
