What is good: The only thing the movie is good at is generating hope that it will finally get better at some point (spoiler alert: it doesn’t!)

What is bad: Almost everything except what you’ve already seen in the trailer.

Loo Break: Even if you grab a couple, you won’t miss out on anything that affects your final verdicts for the movie.

To look or not ?: If you are not a fan of Singham, Us, forget to start this one, but if you are a fan, check them out again.

Available in: Theatrical release

Execution time: 145 minutes

Customer Reviews:

Raising the curtain on the ’93 Mumbai explosions, the story focuses on a large amount of explosive material left over from the blast, linking it to a couple of fugitives who managed to escape back then. Veer Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar) is in charge of the mission of his superior Kabir Shroff (Jaaved Jaaferi), who although he was the star in the resolution of the 93 bombing case, still regrets some of the decisions he made.

Sooryavanshi, along with managing family issues with his wife Riya (Katrina Kaif), is investigating missing RDX that reportedly could be used for multiple bomb blasts in Mumbai. With the help of his former colleagues Us (Ranveer Singh) and Singham (Ajay Devgn), Sooryavanshi races against time, hoping to stop the ticking bomb while avoiding a deadly disaster.

Sooryavanshi Movie Review: Script Analysis

Rohit Shetty has fallen into her own trap, she has made a movie that she could have directed 5-7 years ago while sleepwalking and it would have been a success. But sadly, this is how time works, we are living in a world where movies like Singham & Us already exist. The intention to take advantage of the popularity of the success of Singham & Simmba to introduce another cop in the universe is so visible that it steals the spotlight from Sooryavanshi.

This also exposes Shetty’s weak link in an extremely brutal way, namely CGI that puts your PowerPoint presentation to shame. The visual effects of the all-important helicopter chase scene seem straight out of a low-budget, high-ambition movie. All of this just reminds you how Neeraj Pandey’s film school isn’t easy to crack. The 4 minute trailer painfully impacts the excitement you would have for police cameos. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve already seen the best parts of Us & Singham.

This is a classic example of a director who refuses to change the winning formula and thus loses the essence of originality. Us was very different from Singham and therefore a wonderful fit. Sooryavanshi is casting Akshay Kumar from the world of Neeraj Pandey and throwing him into the middle of Rohit Shetty’s flying universe of cars with lines worse than Housefull 4. They even stole a dedicated climax sequence from him with Singham stealing the spotlight.

Everything in this one is an unsolved mess, from embarrassingly preaching jingoistic scenes to Akshay’s annoying character trait of forgetting names (which has already been hilariously nailed by Paresh Rawal in Awara Paagal Deewana).

Sooryavanshi Movie Review: Star Performance

I never thought Akshay Kumar would turn out to be the pineapple on Rohit Shetty’s half-baked pizza. His entire act is divided into two parts, the first that you have already seen in movies like Baby, Holiday, Bell Bottom and the other that you have already seen in De Dana Dan, Phir Hera Pheri & Bhaagam Bhag.

Katrina Kaif in Tip Tip Barsaa Paani> Katrina Kaif throughout the movie and no, this is not my jerk talking. He rarely adds value to the story and seems to have filmed this simultaneously with Salman Khan’s Bharat. If you ask someone with no Bollywood knowledge to watch Bharat, Sooryavanshi and show you a Katrina Kaif scene from either movie, you won’t be able to tell which movie it is from.

None of the supporting cast actors, namely Gulshan Grover, Jackie Shroff, Kumud Mishra, Jaaved Jaaferi, Sikandar Kher, Nikitin Dheer, left a memorable mark. Each of them is wrong or missing.

Sooryavanshi Movie Review: Directing, Music

Rohit Shetty, in an attempt to give Sooryavanshi the best of both worlds (Singham and Us), fails to create her novelty factor. This has everything Rohit always tries to run away from, like shoddy visuals, boring dialogue, strained emotions. It’s like selling a prototype after the great success of your flagship products. A classic case in which the director refuses to change the already tested template in the failed hope of creating similar magic.

My reports hinted that Arijit Singh’s song would be removed from the movie, but it was Najaa instead, and that’s an extremely bad decision because that would have made things a bit easier. Tip Tip Barsa Paani is still the best part of the movie that brings back the nostalgic chemistry of Akki-Kat. The idea of synchronizing the sounds of the bullet shots with the background score, although already tested, is ingenious and integrates well.

Sooryavanshi Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Sooryavanshi boils down to being a poorly made parody of multiple Rohit Shetty movies (and other similar templates). This breaks expectations that I never had after the 4 minute trailer.

Two stars!
