It has been over two years since the last Marvel movie was released in theaters in India. From SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME [2019]Marvel fans have been waiting for the next phase of the series or rather to hit the screens. Hopes were pinned on the Scarlett Johannsson movie BLACK WIDOW [2021]. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, that film had a direct OTT release in India. But now, with SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS, Marvel intends to return to the big screen with a bang.

SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS begins with the introduction of a man named Xu Wenwu, who finds the mystical ten rings that grant him immortality and great powers. The plot follows Wenwu as he gathers an army of warriors called the Ten Rings and conquers many kingdoms and overthrows governments throughout history. In 1996, Wenwu began searching for the village of Ta Lo, said to be home to various mythical beasts, to expand its power. He finds the entrance to the village, but the village guardian, Ying Li, prevents him from entering. The two eventually fall in love and have two children, Xu Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing. Wenwu abandons the ten rings and his organization to be with his family. However, Li is eventually killed by the Iron Gang, old rivals of the Ten Rings, and Wenwu takes the rings again to slaughter them and resume his criminal activities. Shang-Chi is taken to the Ten Rings complex to be trained in all forms of combat by the Death Dealer, a high-ranking member of the Ten Rings. At the age of 14, Wenwu sends Shang-Chi to assassinate the leader of the Iron Gang. After completing his mission, a traumatized Shang-Chi leaves the Ten Rings and escapes to the United States, where he adopts the name Shaun. Years later, Shaun AKA Shang-Chi lives in San Francisco and works as a valet with his best friend, Katy Chen. One day, while on their way to work on the Muni subway, Shang-Chi and Katy are attacked by members of the Ten Rings led by Razor Fist. Despite fighting them, Shang-Chi discovers that they have taken the pendant his mother gave him. Fearing that the Ten Rings will go after Xialing for her pendant, Shang-Chi decides to track her down and reveals her past to Katy, who agrees to help him. They finally find her in a clandestine fighting club in Macau, of which she is the owner; Xialing expresses her resentment towards Shang-Chi for abandoning her family and her father for neglecting her. The fight club is later attacked by a Ten Ring regiment led by Death Dealer. Wenwu unexpectedly arrives during the attack and captures Shang-Chi, Katy, and Xialing. Once captured, they are taken back to the Wenwu compound and told that he is on a quest to save his wife, his mother, who is held captive. However, Shang-Chi, Katy and Xialing escape and head to the village only to realize that their father had been deceived by an evil being and to protect all life on earth now they will have to face their father Wenwu, the leader of the Ten Rings.

Being an ode to Chinese culture and wisdom, SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS contains many references to oriental folklore. From stories told of soul-eating demons to eternal guardian spirits, the film covers a wide range. The movie starts off on a light note with basic character introductions and soon builds to laying the groundwork for what’s to come. Once Shang-Chi (Shaun) and Katy are introduced, the plot quickly progresses to reveal who they really are and their backstory. From there, we see new characters being introduced, which helps move the story forward. Interestingly, despite being an action movie, SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS starts out slow and picks up pace. However, towards the middle the procedures slow down considerably, but recover in the second half. Humorous elements sprinkled in abundance throughout the film, with a host of Easter eggs and surprises for true Marvel fans, the film keeps the viewer in their seat. However, the second half of the film is a well-executed and constructed action sequence that almost everyone featured in the first half participates in. In fact, SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS make Marvel fans jump for joy as the action unfolds with flawless CGI, well-coordinated action and stunts and of course Marvel’s flare with background music building. a thunderous crescendo. the end.

Destin Daniel Cretton on Simu Liu, Tony Leung, Avengers | Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings

Yet despite this, for those who have been following the Marvel series since Day 1, SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS appears to be missing a crucial ‘X’ factor, a sort of style that made characters like IRON MAN, THOR, AVENGERS and HULK stand out. But despite this, and the fact that the story is quite predictable, the film manages to entertain and revive the nostalgic feeling of seeing a Marvel movie in theaters.

Performance-wise, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi does a good job of rehearsing the role of a boy trained to be a master assassin. Liu manages to execute his action sequences with poise while managing to get excited as well. Nora Lum, known professionally as Awkwafina as Katy, Meng’er Zhang as Xialing, and Tony Chiu-Wai Leung as Xu Wenwu do equally well in their roles. A special mention for Tony Chiu here as he balances his character as a father who longs for his children, a husband for his wife, and a warlord for his power with delicacy. Michelle Yeoh and Ben Kingsley are seriously underused, one is there only as a welcome party and the other as a comedic interlude.

As for the background score, Marvel has proven time and again that they are masters of the game when it comes to using sound to climax. Whether in any of their previous releases, the background score has always played an important role in bringing seriousness to the events on screen. In SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS, it’s the same, the difference is that this time the music features strong shades of oriental instruments. This, coupled with flawless CGI and seamless transitions, makes for an entertaining watch.

Overall, SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS manages to relive Marvel’s action hero saga quite well. Despite a predictable plot, the film is definitely a visual spectacle to be experienced on the big screen.
