The Cinderella fairy tale by Charles Perrault is one that most of us have read in childhood. It is the story of a poor girl whose life is transformed by her fairy godmother and of course, her prince charming. But Kay Cannon has put a modern feminist twist on the story where our main character wants to be known as ‘Her’ rather than royalty. Cinderella marks the acting debut of singing sensation Camila Cabello. The singer is known for her hits like Havana, Senorita, Liar, etc. It is produced by James Corden of The Late Late Show fame. What is it about
Like the classic fairy tale, Cinderella leads a sad life dominated by her stepmother. Unlike the story, our girl loves designing dresses and dreams of becoming a couturier. The young lady manages to get to the ball courtesy of her fairy godmother and we know what happens next.

How hot …
Camila Cabello receives a feminist new age version of Cinderella, and she enhances it with her spontaneity. The singer achieves the character’s sassy quotient perfectly. Nicholas Galitzine is an extraordinarily handsome prince and has a wonderful screen presence. Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver have some of the best lines in the movie. Brosnan plays the role of the silly power-hungry king with poise. Billy Porter shines as the genderless fairy godmother. The creators have tried to make the film as inclusive as possible (we also have a desi element, which I won’t reveal). Feminism, gender neutrality and self-actualization take center stage in the script. James Corden is a hoot as a rat / lackey. Andrew Dunn’s cinematography makes the film look beautiful in every frame. The sequence of the ballroom is dreamy. Another highlight is the use of songs. Songs like Ed Sheeran’s Perfect, Material Girl, and Whatta Man are used very well in the film.

What is not …
Kay Cannon turns Cinderella’s character upside down. But there is no genuine conflict in the movie. Idina Menzel as her stepmother is apologized that she has had a difficult life fighting the patriarchal system. Also, some of the sequences seem pretty silly. We understand that it is a musical but the pieces set in the film are too many. Instead, we wish we had a few more moments between Camila and Nicholas as they look good together.

BL verdict
While modern Cinderella may resonate with the dreams of young people who have the perfect combination of love, family, and a successful professional life, the film does not constantly attract their attention. Camila Cabello and Nicholas Galitzine are lovely but could have been used in a better way. The talented singer makes a sure debut and that’s what the movie is all about!
