Lately, Bollywood has developed a penchant for delivering comedies with a message – call it killing two birds with one stone – you can laugh and also come home enlightened. And, mind you, these types of films have become more and more prevalent since the turn of the millennium, due to the high rate of commercial and critical success they exhibit, not to mention that they are generally made by good filmmakers with good intentions. Movies like 3 Idiots, Jolly LLB, PK, OMG, Badhaai Ho, Bala, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Padman and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha reiterate this point. Heck, Rajkumar Hirani and Ayushmann Khurrana have built their entire careers with these films. The latter’s brother, Aparshakti Khurana, is now coming, accompanied by Prautan Bahl and Abhishek Banerjee, to try his hand at the subgenre of social satire. So is your Helmet, which premiered at ZEE5, fun and relevant too? The answer to that is ‘yes’ and ‘yes’. What they don’t expect is that the boxes are full of condoms. Lucky now has to think smart and fast or risk losing Rupali forever.

What heat

Helmet is all about acting and dialogue, and everyone from main stars Pranutan Bahl and Aparshakti Khurana to their supporting cast, Abhishek Banerjee, Ashish Verma, Sharib Hashmi, and Ashish Vidyarthi are all in the money with comic timing. perfect, certainly helped. from Gopal Mudhane, Satramm Ramani, Rohan Shankar, Amit Tyagi and Ajay Singh, the sparkling dialogue and funny situations that have peppered history. What’s even more important is how they never lose sight of the message amid the hilarity. Milin Jog’s camera work gets the feel of a small town and after a long time the editing (Manish Pradhan) of a Hindi film looks sharp too.

What not

As much as Satramm Ramani shines as a co-writer, he hesitates a bit in an individualistic way when it comes to directing his theme, and some of Helmet’s in-between lacks the vibrancy exhibited in the rest of the film. Plus, the music and the background score are a disappointment (another case of too many cooks spoiling the broth, with a mini army of music directors being tied up).

BL verdict

Despite a few hiccups, Helmet makes condoms look fun, but also uses that hilarity to never lose sight that they’re not a fun affair. Without being preaching, this acts as a socially relevant major comedy, especially for smaller towns and rural areas, no doubt aided by lively performances by Pranutan Bahl, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Ashihs Verma. I go with 3.5 out of 5 stars.
