Nayanthara is a top-notch blind woman in this gripping thriller who loses a bit of steam in her final act.

Tamil cinema and dark and gruesome thrillers, which touch on disturbing themes, go hand in hand. Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Ratsasan, Psycho, Thupparivaalan, Visaranai, are the titles that immediately come to mind when talking about thrillers that deal with disturbing themes but that never let you breathe with the grip that surrounds you from beginning to end. So Nayanthara’s Netrikann, released on Disney + Hotstar, joining Kollywood’s crème de la crème league of dark thrillers? Well, he almost lost the ship, but that says a lot too, given that elite company director Milind Rau and Vignesh Shivan’s production were aiming to come together. What is it about

Durga (Nayanthara) has to resign from active duty as a CBI officer after a car accident leaves her visually impaired. What she doesn’t give up, however, is her sense of duty and her ability to accommodate her disability with her training, which helps her go after a ruthless sociopath with whom she has a run-in. Aiding her in her search are SI Manikandan (Manikandan R. Achari) and food delivery man Gautham (Sharan Shakti).

What heat

For three-quarters of Netrikann, suspense and mystery are purely on the edge of the seat, fueled by the magnificent performances of the four main actors – Nayanthara, Ajmal Ameer, Manikandan R. Achari and Sharan Shakti – with the script. and its tone. -perfect all gelling together courtesy of Milind Rau’s uptight management. As for the technicalities, the thriller maintains the same superlative throughout its duration in terms of Girishh Gopalakrishnan’s baffling background score and RD Rajasekhar’s modest camera work to the point where it needs to be transformed into haunting visuals, which it aptly achieves. .

What not

When we said three-quarters earlier, it’s because Netrikann falters in his final act, after the big reveal happens just before. Also, the big twist on the big reveal is a bit of a stretch when it comes to deus ex machinas. It’s not that what happens in the last quarter brings the movie down, it’s just that it ends up with a bit of a buffer compared to what preceded it. Also, Lawrence Kishore’s editing should have been sharper, much sharper; a movie like this really should have been 2 hours 26 minutes.

BL verdict

Nayanthara is almost perfect as a blind woman in Netrikaan and admirably carries the film along with solid support from the rest of the cast. And to its credit, if tempered by the sloppy final act, this Tamil thriller is truly suspenseful and mysterious with a dark, haunting edge. I go with 3.5 out of 5 stars.
