Indian cinema, not just Bollywood, doesn’t really have a brilliant history in Indian cinema, it doesn’t even take all your fingers to count the good ones. Except for Lakshya, Uri, Border, Haqeeqat, Lalkaar, Aakraman and Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973), nothing remarkable comes to mind or to Indian filmmakers. Now, to capitalize on the patriotic sentiment simmering during Independence Day week, Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani star Shershaah has launched on Amazon Prime. So does he do justice to Kargil’s martyred war hero Captain Vikram Batra, and do we get another good Indian war movie just two years after Uri? While the answer to both questions is a ‘no’, Shershaah is not a total disappointment either. What is it about

Shershaah strives to gift us with the story of Captain Vikram Batra from his early days as a child who dreamed of nothing more than joining the Indian Army to how he quickly rose through the ranks and earned the admiration of his superiors and subordinates through acts. from extreme courage to how he finally gave it his all on Kargil’s ill-fated battlefront.

Check out the trailer for Shershaah below:

What heat

First of all, the best part about Shershaah is that it lacks patriotism and focuses more on Captain Vikram Batra’s love for the army and his fellow soldiers rather than always yelling: “Bharat kills ki jai, ”In the drop of a hat. And when the film is not distracted by his life outside of his post in the military, Shershaah is a perfectly attractive watch. Sidharth Malhotra, although not exemplary, shows a remarkable improvement over his previous films and Kiara Advani once again proves to be a profitable actor regardless of the seriousness or the length of the character he offers him. Among the supporting cast, Shiv Pandit, Sahil Vaid, Nikitin Dheer and Raj Arjun make their mark. The songs, although not necessary, are pleasant to the ears.

What not

There are too many distractions in Shershaah, be it college romances or family feuds, and none of them add much value to the script. When director Vishnuvardhan and writer Sandeep Srivastava don’t focus on Vikram Batra’s life in a war zone, they seem to have no idea how to manage his personal space. To that end, A. Sreekar Prasad’s edits also needed to be sharper, and when the army-centric parts, where Shershaah really keeps his interest, are disappointed by an average camera work from Kamaljeet Negi, which becomes even most prominent during the current battle, where the VFX also appears quite uneven. The scroe fund also leaves a lot to be desired. Compared to Uri released a couple of years ago, this one falls several notches below the technical radar.

BL verdict

Sidharth Malhotra shows marked improvement, Kiara Advani again demonstrates her versatility, patriotism is fortunately absent and when Shershaah is not focused on Captain Vikram Batra’s college romance or family squabbles, it makes for quite an attractive watch. That said, there are far too many distractions from royal bravery and the important battle scenes also lack the fire and brimstone of a Lakshya or Uri. I go with 2.5 out of 5 stars.
